IBMs premier high-end hypervisor and operating system. Often used to host multiple z/Linux guest systems, but can host any System z mainframe operating system, including z/OS, z/VSE, and even z/VM itself. Can also run applications in its own right under its supplied CMS (Conversational Monitor System) guest.
Originally released as VM/370 in 1972. Renamed to z/VM in 2000. Also marketed as z/VM SDO (Service Delivery Offering), bundling z/VM with other software such as VM System DDR (DASD Dump Restore).
