Customer Information Control System (CICS). Transaction management and processing system for z/OS and z/VSE. Also runs on other platforms including System i, AIX, Microsoft Windows and HP-UX as TXSeries.
Originally released by IBM as Public Utility Customer Infomation Control System, or CICS/OS in 1968 - a program offering. CICS/VS for VSE (later z/VSE), OS/VS1 and OS/VS2 (later z/OS) released in 1974. Applications originally used macros to call CICS services. CICS/VS 1.3 and CICS/DOS/VS 1.7 introduced Command Level Programming: applications used a command style to call CICS services, and passed through a pre-processor to convert these to macros. CICS/MVS 2.1.2 and CICS/VSE 2.3 were the last CICS releases to support macro level programming.
Support for VSE ended in 2023. CICS/VSE acquired by 21st Century Software and renamed OLTP for VSEn.
